Online Coding for Kids: A Review of Simply Coding

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

I am excited to share with you our experience with Coding for Kids Annual Membership! I have been happy with various free versions of online coding for kids, but have never ventured into a paid program. This is better than I expected!

I well remember sitting down to the boxy dos computer and carefully inserting a floppy disk. The awful graphics of the Oregon Trail pop up and I quickly die when my oxen run away and abandon me.

Long gone is the technology of my childhood.

One by one, I teach my kids to read and write, how to add and subtract, and the history of our country. We take piano lessons, I regularly search for art classes, and I plan daily outside activities. I’ve decided to add coding to this regimen!

What is Online Coding for Kids?

You can purchase coding books and games, but online coding is hands on learning.

We have used several different free versions for our online coding classes. These coding websites for beginners have been helpful and my children learned a lot from them.

That being said, Simply Coding is an awesome online coding program for kids and adults too. I learned a lot myself!

All About Simply Coding

What is Simply Coding? It is an online program that teaches kids (and their parents LOL) how to design and code websites, games, and apps. A yearly fee is required and you are given access to all of their programs. They offer a 10 day free trial so you can look around the site and see if it will be a good fit for your family.

We took the “Intro to Websites” course and you know all that html jibberish that you know is important but are too afraid to touch? I understand it now! So does my 13 year old 🙂 I might have him design my next website!

The course was divided into 8 lessons with quizzes after each lesson. Each lesson takes a couple of days depending on how quickly your child catches onto coding. It was more advanced than I realized it would be. I would not consider this beginning coding. At the end of each lesson is a simple quiz.

I would like to make a note here that we are using a chrome book and ran into some complications that I don’t think we would have had if we were using a desktop or “real” laptop.

Simply Coding offers a large variety of classes. There are too many to list in this post, but here are a few to give you an idea:

  • Java script game design
  • Minecraft mods in Java
  • Digital Photography
  • Gimp
  • Adobe Lightroom
  • Adobe Photoshop CC
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Onenote
  • Prezi
  • Animation 4Kids
  • Tux Paint 4Kids

Why Simply Coding is a Program We will Always Use

Now that you know what you can get with Simply Coding, I want to share with you why I, personally, really like it.

First, everything is explained very well. They provide both text and video. We watched the video first and then referred back to the text when needed.

During daytime hours, they have instructors available to chat with if you have trouble. We did chat with someone and found them to be polite and helpful. If you are working when no one is available live, you can leave a message and someone will get back to you.

The variety of courses your child can take is the best I’ve seen in online coding for kids and I plan on turning it into an actual class rather than just a fun extra. I know these skills will come in handy when my kids are ready for the workforce.

Is Coding Good for Kids?

I had to ask myself if I was overdoing it with the amount of activities I have in our educational calendar. I can argue that each one benefits them in one way or another.

Is coding good for kids? Will it benefit them or feed their addiction to online games?

I have come to the conclusion that it is good for them. It teaches logical thinking, how to plan and organize their thoughts, and how to take a big problem and break it down into smaller pieces.

How Will Simply Coding Benefit Your Kids?

The above mentioned benefits are just the beginning. They will aid your child in their other school work, activities, and careers (even if they never go into a field heavy in computers).

Simply Coding Annual Membership has been a joy to review and I am excited for many more learning adventures to come. If you are looking for an excellent online coding for kids program, I highly recommend it.
