Bible Verses about Faith and Trust (and Hope!): A Series to Encourage

Welcome back to our series on hope! These Bible verses are about faith and trust. Without faith and trust in God, we pretty much have no hope.

You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You. (Isaiah 26:3)

I can’t think of a better verse to begin our topic of Bible verses about faith and trust!

We trust God because He has proved Himself faithful. This does not mean that life has gone well with us and we’ve escaped the cruelty of a fallen world. It means that God has never left us and has walked beside us.

Bible Verses about Faith and Trust

The Bible tells us that without faith it is impossible to please God.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)

Before we begin our list of Bible verses, let’s talk about faith and trust.

Hebrews 11:1 says “ Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”

Bible verses about hope and faith

Matthew Henry explains this verse way better than I ever could!

“Faith always has been the mark of God’s servants, from the beginning of the world. Where the principle is planted by the regenerating Spirit of God, it will cause the truth to be received, concerning justification by the sufferings and merits of Christ. And the same things that are the object of our hope, are the object of our faith. It is a firm persuasion and expectation, that God will perform all he has promised to us in Christ. This persuasion gives the soul to enjoy those things now; it gives them a subsistence or reality in the soul, by the first-fruits and foretastes of them. Faith proves to the mind, the reality of things that cannot be seen by the bodily eye. It is a full approval of all God has revealed, as holy, just, and good.”

Hope and faith go hand in hand.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11)

God’s thoughts are for us. It is His desire to give us peace, and hope, and a future.

Psalms about Faith and Trust

The Psalms are full of Bible verses about faith and trust! David understood that faith, hope, and trust all go together in a beautiful union that brings us closer to God. May these scriptures about hope and faith from David’s pen bring you into the same kind of relationship.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. (Psalm 34:8-9)

Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved. (Psalm 62:1-2)

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16:9-11)

Because we leave our faith in God and not in worldly temporary things, we have nothing to fear. If you struggle with fear (like me!) check out these posts “Bible Stories about Courage” and “21 Inspiring Quotes about Courage and Fear”

The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

Scriptures about Hope and Faith

Need a little encouragement? Our hope comes from God and not from the things we see around us. God provides us dozens of scriptures to encourage us in hope and faith.

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
And whose hope is the Lord. (Jeremiah 17:7)

We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father, knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God. (1 Thessalonians 1:2-4)

I love how this verse calls God the “God of hope”. Hope is a powerful word, isn’t it?

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13)

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.  Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. (Hebrews 10:22-23)

What Does the Bible Say about Hope and Faith in Hard Times?

Bible verses about faith and hope should include faith in hard times because let’s face it, hard times is when we begin looking for that hope.

Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation. (Psalm 91:14-16)

You in Your mercy have led forth the people whom You have redeemed; You have guided them in Your strength to Your holy habitation. (Exodus 15:13)

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (John 14:27)

Everything going smoothly in life is not peace. That’s what we are often looking for, but true peace is calm in the midst of the storm. “God’s Peace is Different from the World’s Peace” explains this concept well.

It’s the ability to face the winds, rain, and dark clouds and proclaim that your God is with you and therefore you will not fall. It is looking pain in the face and declaring that you have a God who is stronger.

Hope and Faith to Combat Anxiety

I feel as if I have to include the word anxiety here because if we could embrace this hope and faith found in Christ, we would be able to free ourselves from the horrible cloud that hangs over us. Lullaby Lark has a great post about fear.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; (Philippians 4:6)

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:6-7)

Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you;
He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)

Write these Bible verses about faith and hope down and allow them to become stronger than your anxiety. I know it is difficult, but this promises are in God’s word to help us fight anxiety and fear.

Bible Verses about Hope, Faith and Trust

Galatians 2:20 is a good way to sum up our Bible verses about hope, faith and trust.

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

If we have the faith to call on the name of the Lord and be saved, then we are crucified with Christ and have the ability to fight against all of the pain and suffering of this world. We are not alone, we have embraced the only one who can save us. Our hope lies in him and him alone.

  1. We come to Christ in faith. At that point, we have no basis for trust. Trust is concieved out of relationship.

Once the work of faith is matured and we know/experience that god is faithful, we have the basis to trust Him. We learn the life of trust from our walk in faith. Trust doesn’t work if we have no basis. We gain that basis from faith. We learn from our sins, from dissapointing god, from our struggles with him, from our faithlessness and god’s forgiveness, his constant presence and his love expressed in the redemptive work of the Holy Spirit. We then learn to trust Him and not ourselves in all situations because of the relationship birthed in faith and matured in trust. It’s like completing elementary school and then moving on to middle school. There is no clear line of separation, just a more mature level of being educated. You have to learn the basics before you can apply them. In this case, trusting in God is the hardest thing to learn because it goes against all our natural experience.
