Why a round-up of quotes about courage and fear? Because I’ve spent a lot of my life afraid. Afraid of what people think of me, afraid of failure, afraid of messing my life up (or that of my kids!).
Life is hard, isn’t it? It is full of hurts and sorrows, uncertainties and disappointments. We struggle with fear, anxiety, depression, and chronic illness. If we allow ourselves to dwell too long in these dark places, we will never experience the life we were created to have.
It is not a good place to dwell. It is time to motivate this negative energy into something positive and take the chances we need to make our lives better and richer and fuller.
What is a Good Quote for Courage?
Let’s begin with quotes for courage.
“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” Winston Churchill
“Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.
– Atticus Finch” To Kill a Mockingbird
“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear – not absence of fear.” Mark Twain
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” Nelson Mandela
“You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.” William Faulkner
Faith and Courage Quotes
The word faith can have both a spiritual application as well as a more “earthly” one. My faith is in my Lord and Savior, but I can also use this term to mean a strong trust in. I have faith that my husband will make wise choices for our family. I trust that he will.
I have faith that when I step out and do something I’m afraid of that I will grow as a person.
“The reason birds can fly and we can’t is simply because they have perfect faith, for to have faith is to have wings.” J.M. Barrie
“Faith is like WiFi. It’s invisible, but it has the power to connect you to what you need.” Anonymous
“Feed your faith and your fear will starve.” Anonymous
“Your faith can move mountains and your doubt can create them.” Anonymous
Spiritual Courage Quotes
For spiritual courage quotes I tried to begin with verses I haven’t used in other posts, but I couldn’t help ending it with a couple of my favorite Old Testament verses.

“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 8 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.” (2 Corinthians 4:7-11)
“Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love.” (1 Corinthians 16:13-14)
