The grieving process is a complicated one and we all go about it differently. These Christian grief quotes are meant to be a source of comfort as you wade through your difficult times. I have a collection of Bible quotes from God’s word as well as touching words from various authors.
When I lost my beautiful 8 year old daughter, Rebekah, in an accident my life was shattered. I thought I had died and our whole family was plunged into a darkness that I can’t properly describe.
I clung to Isaiah 43:1-2
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you. (Isaiah 43:1-2)
I would love for you to meet my Rebekah! Even more than that, I want the whole world to know that a little girl lived and died and is missed intensely. Click over to Rebekah’s heart to read about her!
Bible Verses for Times of Grief
The following verses helped me through my own grief. Our Lord is the God of all comfort and I don’t know how I could have gotten through my darkest days without Him. I pray the presence of God surrounds you and the peace of God fills your heart as you study these verses and embrace the following quotes.
Some of us are comforted by the hope of eternal life and the knowledge that our loved ones are in a better place, but that doesn’t take the pain away. The good news is that the holy spirit will strengthen your heart in this sad time and will give you the desire to push through.
Jesus is known as the “man of sorrows” because he experienced all of our times of distress and life’s losses on the cross. He bore our sins and took the sting of death for us that we might be able to connect to our loving Father in Heaven. Christ Jesus died for our present sufferings and gives us unconditional love through all of the hard times this fallen world throws at us.
Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes, we are healed. (Isaiah 53:4-5)
I found the most comfort in verses about God being with me. Grief is a lonely road to travel.

Romans 8:18
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. (Romans 8:18)
Revelation 21:4
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)
Psalm 23
This beloved Psalm makes me so thankful to be a child of God. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:1-4)
Zephaniah 3:17
The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)
Psalm 107:13-14
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses.
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And broke their chains in pieces. (Psalm 107:13-14)
Psalm 120:1
In my distress I cried to the Lord, And He heard me. (Psalm 120:1)
Psalm 8:38-39
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)
Lamentations 3:55-57
I called on Your name, O Lord, from the lowest pit.
You have heard my voice:
“Do not hide Your ear
From my sighing, from my cry for help.”
You drew near on the day I called on You,
And said, “Do not fear!” (Lamentations 3:55-57)

Comforting Words for Times of Loss
The journey of grief is a solitary one. Friends and family members offer words of comfort and try to support you through the difficult days, but it is the daily life that wears you down the most. Strangely, I found comfort reading grief quotes. I felt like someone understood what I was going through without being in my space.
I pray the following quotes help you on your healing journey.
“Her absence is like the sky, spread over everything.” – C.S.Lewis
“I see people, as they approach me, trying to make up their minds whether they’ll ‘say something about it’ or not. I hate if they do, and if they don’t.” – C.S. Lewis
“You will lose someone you can’t live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news. They live forever in your broken heart that doesn’t seal back up. And you come through. It’s like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly – that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp.” – Anne Lamott
“When someone you love dies, and you’re not expecting it, you don’t lose her all at once; you lose her in pieces over a long time – the way the mail stops coming, and her scent fades from the pillows and even from the clothes in her closet and drawers. Gradually, you accumulate the parts of her that are gone. Just when the day comes – when there’s a particular missing part that overwhelms you with the feeling that she’s gone, forever – there comes another day, and another specifically missing part.” – John Irving
“Sometimes our way lies in the sunlight. Other times it lies in the path of sorrow. Yet even sorrows turn to blessings when they make us less attached to the world and more attached to God. Then more than ever we discover that Jesus truly is our friend.” – Billy Graham
”There is nothing wrong with falling at the feet of Jesus in silence. God can hear your tears, He knows your heart, He knows you. You don’t always have to speak.” – Stasi Eldredge
“Lamenting is the spiritually mature response to sadness and sorrow. Our spiritual aliveness is not found in our ability to suppress our sadness. Our spiritual aliveness is found in our ability to bring it to God.” -Rich Villodas
As I end this post, I want to remind you again that God is with you. He has not left you to walk this ugly road alone. He wants you to turn to Him in your darkest times. He loves you.

Good morning, Heather, thanks so much for another wonderful and heart-filled lesson on grief. Your sharing of Rebekah and scriptures was so enlightening and helpful. I’m the person who grieves silently, so I’ve never been good at comforting others during this time. The words “I’m sorry for your loss” sound like passing words with no comfort. I appreciated the scriptures and especially the thought that God is always with us, He’s not left us, but just wants us to come back into His loving arms. I always look forward to your Lessons from Home. I’ve been following you for a couple of years. Thank you for your ministry. You are a blessing, and one day I look forward to meeting you.
