Scriptures to Speak Over Your Child

Let’s begin with scriptures to pray over our sons.  The practice of praying scripture is new to me.  I have prayed for as long as I can remember, but there have been many times in life when I did not have words. Has that ever happened to you?  You need to pray, but you are so frustrated, exhausted, hurt etc. that you can’t get the words out?

During a recent difficult season, this is where I was at.  I opened to the Psalms and found that David had words that seemed to be pouring from my own heart.  I was sold.  I began looking at verses and applying them directly to my own situation and then praying them back to God.  Read more about praying the Psalms!

There is power in praying God’s word back to Him!

My oldest son is named Caleb.  Caleb means brave and my son is anything but.  However, over the years, when he was struggling to do something out of his comfort zone, I’d remind Him what his name means and that Joshua’s bravery came from God.  It was a gift.

He understood this and it helped many times.

Our biblical Caleb stood with Joshua, full of faith when everyone else was afraid.  Near the end of his life he says, “but I wholly followed the Lord my God.”  (Joshua 14:8)

This is my prayer for my Caleb.  I often pray “Lord, may Caleb grow up to wholly follow you”.

Bible Verses for My Son

Are you with me?  Let’s go through various verses and goals that you may have for your sons and pray for them together.

Prayers for strength.  We know our sons will face all kinds of difficulties in their lives.  Not only difficulties, but painful seasons in which they will question you, your faith, and everything else.  We want them to have the courage to do what is right no matter what opposition meets them.  Use these verses to pray that God surrounds your son with strength.

The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him.  (Psalm 28:7)

May you surround my son with strength, help him in times of trouble, be his shield.  May his heart always turn to you.  Put a song in his heart that he may praise you all of his days.

Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore!  (1 Chronicles 16:11)

May my son find his strength in you, oh Lord.  Call him in times of trouble.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”  (Joshua 1:9)

Pour strength and courage into my son.  May he feel your presence wherever he goes.

Bible word searches for kids

Prayers that he knows you are with him.  One thing that can carry us through just about anything is the knowledge that God is with us.  If there is anything I hope my kids learn from me is that they are never alone.  God is with them, guiding, instructing, protecting…

Pray these verses over your sons that they might come to understand this.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.

When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.  (Isaiah 43:1-2)

Lord, may you make your presence known to my son.  May he always know you are here with him walking beside him no matter what life hands him.

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.  For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:37-39)

Lord, you said nothing can separate us from your love.  Make that love known to my son, wrap him in it, surround him with it.  May he know that he belongs to you and he is never alone.

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.  (Deuteronomy 31:8)

Lord, teach my son that strength comes from you and that when relying on you, there is nothing that can hurt him.  Stay true to your word, do not leave him, but let him feel your presence and trust in you.

Prayers for my son’s future.  My prayer for my sons is that they give their hearts to Christ and serve him all of their days.  May they grow up to walk in the Lord and be faithful.  I pray that they grow up to be responsible men that love their wives and children and work hard.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.  (Jeremiah 29:11-13)

Lord, direct my son’s future, give him of your goodness.  May he call upon you in faith and seek your will in everything.  Be there for him as you have promised.

Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ  (Philippians 1:6)

Lord, fulfill your will in my son’s heart and life.  Fill him with your goodness, teach him of who you are, and have your way in him.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;

In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.  (Proverbs 3:5-6)

May my son trust you with all of his heart.  May he not follow his own will, but follow you in everything he does.  Direct his steps, show him your truth, guide him and make your will known to him.

How do I Pray for My Son?

How do I pray for my son?

The answer is simple.  From your heart.  People often want to pray eloquently and feel as if they need a lot of well said words, but the truth is, God hears it all.  He also knows exactly what is in your heart before you even begin to pray so if it comes out all jumbled, rest assured, he hears you.

We are going to continue our concept of praying scripture over our sons.  May these Bible verses to pray over your sons encourage you to pray intentionally and repeatedly.  I encourage you to pray these verses over and over.  I also recommend grabbing a notebook and writing them down.  Years from now, you will look back and read your prayers and see God working in your son’s life in ways you had never foreseen.

Prayer for My Struggling Son

Few things break our mother’s heart more than watching our kids struggle.  I don’t know about you, but my prayers triple when my boys are hurt, making poor choices, or struggling in all the regular kid trials that are sure to come their way.

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.  (Romans 5:1-4)

Dear Lord, fill my son with your peace as he struggles with _____________.  Surround him with your love and grace, work in his heart and perfect your will in his life.  May he learn the painful lessons of life that are only brought about by trials. Grow his character, teach him perseverance, fill him with hope.

But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.  (1 Peter 5:10)

Lord, surround my son with your love and grace.  May your will be done in his heart and life while you perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle him.  Guide his footsteps, teach him your ways, and fill him with joy and peace.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.  (Romans 8:28)

Lord, let your will be done with my son, may your purpose be perfected in his life.

Bible verses to pray over your son

Prayers for My Grown Son

Isn’t it crazy how many seasons you go through when raising kids?  Diapers and middle of the night feedings turn into toddler messes and “me do it!”.  The preschool days bring about excitement and unrestrained energy and a new understanding of the world around them.  The stages of life go on and on and I couldn’t begin to choose my favorite.  Each one is terrible and amazing all at the same time.

I have not yet entered the grown child phase of life, but I know that my own adult life has been a series of ups and downs.  Our sons need our prayers now more than ever as they learn to navigate their own situations and continue to grow in wisdom and truth.

He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly,

to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?  (Micah 6:8)

Lord, may my son not only serve you, but be a wonderful light in a dark world.  May he love others the way you do, may he stand strong for those who need support, and may he have a humble heart before you and his fellow man.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.  (John 14:27)

Lord, surround my son with peace.  May he have peace in his employment, his family, his heart, and in his mind.  Teach him that true peace is surrendering to you and that it has less to do with what is going on around him and more about the peace that you give.

For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.  (Psalms 91:11)

Lord, protect my son.  Keep him safe.  Keep him from the evils of this world and the danger that lurks behind every corner.  Stay true to your word and send your angels to keep him safe.

I do believe in praying scripture, it is very powerful. For many years I have prayed for my children, and do continue to personalized Col. 1:9b-12, where Paul is telling the believers in Colossi that he and Timothy never cease to pray for them, asking God that they may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; so they may walk worthy of the Lord, pleasing him in all things, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience, endurance with joyfulness. It covers so many areas of our lives. I love this prayer.
