12 Bible Verses About Building a Strong Foundation

The first thing that comes to mind when we think of Bible verses about building a strong foundation is the parable of the wise man and the foolish man that Jesus told at the closing of the Sermon on the Mount.  He tells us that a good foundation is built on solid rock which is the word of God and obedience to Him.

In this post we will go over this parable and what it means as well as how to apply it to our lives.  God’s word doesn’t do us any good unless we are making an effort to follow and obey it.  How do we establish a solid foundation?  What was the foundation of the apostles and what examples did they set for us?  How do we set the foundation of God for our families?

Bible Verses About Building a Strong Foundation

When we talk about a strong foundation, I think we can all agree that we are speaking about an intimate relationship with Christ and how He helps us weather the storms of life. On the day of judgment, it is our hearts that must be right in the sight of God and we will have no excuse.

Are we building on ourselves or the tested stone? Are we allowing God to change our hearts and minds? Have we been obedient to His call?

Matthew 7:24-27

Let’s begin these Bible verses about building a strong foundation with the words of Christ Jesus and the parable of the wise builder and foolish builder.

It’s important to note that this parable is given at the end of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus had just gone through a detailed teaching about how the Law is to be put into practice in our everyday lives.

He explains how the word of God needed to result in not only an outward action but an inward change of heart.

With this in mind, notice how the parable is worded “But everyone who hears these sayings of mine and…”.

What sayings? The ones he had just given us in Matthew chapters 5-7.

1 Kings 7:9-11

This is about Solomon building God’s temple.  I did not include details about the whole structure but wanted to point out the beauty of the foundation.  While the temple fell during Babylon’s attacks, God’s firm foundation stands.  His truth and righteousness continue.  He is a living stone, not made of rock, active in our lives with His steadfast love.

Psalm 89:14

We are to build our lives on God’s righteousness and truth. They are the foundation we need to grow strong in the Lord, have peace and joy in our lives, and raise godly children that are do not cave to the world’s lukewarm definition of right and wrong.

Psalm 89:5

Call of the name of the Lord, find your peace under the shadow of His wing.  He is the skilled master builder, working in your heart and in your life.

Isaiah 58:11-12

This is a beautiful passage of scripture showing God’s grace and love toward Israel and all of mankind.

Isaiah 28:16

Jesus is our precious corner stone.  It is upon him that we build our spiritual house to avoid the gates of hell.

What is the Foundation of the House of the Lord? More Bible Verses About Building a Strong Foundation

Jesus is the wise masterbuilder, drawing us to the Lord God.  The apostles understood that the house of the Lord is now God’s people and we are drawn together by the foundational truths of Christ dying on the cross, repentance, and baptism.  What other sort of work do we need to continue to build our own lives on God’s truth?

These next Bible verses about building a strong foundation are centered more around the church and how we are a strong foundation together as we stand strong in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:4-6

It is God’s desire that we draw close to Him, to become one with Christ as Christ is one with Him. As we are obedient to God’s word, we build our lives on Him. This is a continual process.

1 Corinthians 3:10-15

God has appointed people to bring the truth out into the open, to teach us about Christ and salvation, but it is up to us to build upon Christ in our own lives once we come to the knowledge of him.

We can continue to live a shallow life of sin or we can grow in the truth and allow God to change our hearts. The choice is ours.

These verses explain how God will try our hearts and what we’ve chosen to do with the truth He has given us. Will it burn as wood, hay, and straw or will it be unbreakable like gold, silver, and precious stones?

Ephesians 2:19-22

Paul paints a beautiful picture here! As fellow believers, we join a long line of faithful children of God. This painting began with Adam and Eve and continued through the hardships of sin, the rise and fall of empires, the coming of the promised Messiah, the birth of a new era, and will end as the last child of God enters His kingdom.

Let us join the faithful and obedient, let us strive to fulfill God’s will for our lives as we build upon the testimonies of those who came before us.

1 Timothy 6:17-19

Good works are key to building our foundation, but I warn you to be sure those good works are a result of a pure heart. Many fall into the trap of wanting to be recognized and admired. When we are storing up for ourselves a good foundation, our motives are the love of God, nothing else.

2 Timothy 2:19-21

Just like the good works mentioned above, Paul tells us to depart from iniquity. You cannot have both. If you are looking to build a strong foundation, you must remove sin from your life and be obedient to His word.

You cannot do both.

Hebrews 11:8-10

Abraham was the father of a nation, one God set aside to teach His truths to. These truths were to be recorded for all to know and study. God chose Abraham’s bloodline to fulfill His promise back in the Garden of Eden. The promise of a savior that would bruise Satan’s head.

Abraham never saw God’s promise to him fulfilled, but he understood that God was not only talking about the land of Israel, but also a spiritual kingdom. He understood that his obedience to the one true God and turning away from the idols of the land would result in something far greater than an earthly property.

May we all have the heart of Abraham.

These Bible verses about building a strong foundation are inspiring. They make me determined to stand strong on God’s truth and fulfill His will for my life. I want nothing more than to purge the sin in my heart and join the ranks of faithful believers who paved the way before me.
